Comparison of opaque-2 corn, milo and wheat in diets for finishing swine.

چکیده
T HE reliance on certain cereal grains as sole sources of dietary protein for finishing swine has been successful when supplemental lysine has been provided. Milo and wheat, appropriately supplemented with vitamins, minerals and lysine, have each produced gain and feed/gain equal to that of a 12 % protein cornsoybean meal diet (Jensen, Becker and Harmon, 1965, 1967). Recent introduction of Opaque-2 corn (Mertz, Bates and Nelson, 1964), which contains greater amounts of most essential amino acids, especially lysine and tryptophan, than found in regular corn has stimulated further interest in simplified diets for finishing swine. It has been reported (Cromwell et al., 1967; Cromwell, Pickett and Beeson, 1967a) that due to its higher contents of lysine and tryptophan Opaque-2 corn was superior to regular corn for growing swine. The tests reported here were conducted to evaluate Opaque-2 corn, milo and wheat in diets for finishing swine.

Alternative Feed Ingredients for Pigs
Largely due to the demand for grains for the bio-fuel industry, the cost of feed energy will increase worldwide. Therefore, alternative energy supplying pig feed ingredients should be explored, including distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS), field peas, wheat shorts and liquid co-products from the bio-fuel and food industry. The inclusion of DDGS in diets is limited by the fiber concent...

We investigated the suitability of 11 diets as culture media for the psocids Lepinotus reticulatus Enderlein (Psocoptera: Trogiidae) and Liposcelis entomophila (Enderlein) (Psocoptera: Liposcelididae). The culture media comprised six diets made of plain cereals, namely, wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), corn (Zea mays L.), milo Sorghum bicolor (L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), oats (Avena sativa L...
متن کاملLimiting Amino Acids in Low-protein Corn-soybean Meal Diets for Growing-finishing Swine 1 ,2
Experiments were conducted with growing and finishing swine to evaluate the effectiveness of various amino acid additions to low-protein corn-soybean meal diets. Two feeding experiments were conducted with growing swine each including a 16% protein positive control diet. In the first, a 14% protein diet served as the negative control while in the second trial it was a 12% protein diet. Amino ac...
متن کاملEffect of feather meal on live animal performance and carcass quality and composition of growing-finishing swine.
A total of 252 crossbred pigs were used in two experiments to determine the effect of feeding hydrolyzed feather meal (FM) during the growing-finishing period on animal performance, carcass composition, and pork quality. All pigs were blocked by weight, and dietary treatments were assigned randomly to pens within blocks. In Exp. 1, 24 pens were randomly assigned to one of three dietary treatmen...

Two experiments utilizing a total of 530 pigs were conducted to evaluate the effects of commercial enzymes in diets containing dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) on nursery pig growth performance. In Exp. 1, 180 pigs (initially 19.9 lb) were used in a 27-d growth trial to compare the effects of Easyzyme, Hemicell-W, and Porzyme in diets containing 30% DDGS on weanling pig performance....
